Cory Barlog, Game Director for God of War 2 Interview
Wednesday, May 10, 2006, 3:02AM EST
Cory Barlog, game director, God of War 2, talks about the second mythological adventure for PS2, which is on display at Sony’s booth.
What are the challenges in making a sequel to a game that has won so many
awards and brought such critical acclaim?
The real challenge lies in bringing in new content and ideas without screwing up what worked so well in the first game. What we are doing is adding new enemies, more brutal and bloody combat, new abilities, new weapons that are fully integrated into the combat experience, all wrapped up in the beautiful epic levels and an even bigger story.
Can you talk about some of the new gameplay elements that will really wow
gamers this time around?
One thing I am really excited about is the integration of the Pegasus. We are fully integrating the God of War combat system into the flight experience complete with context sensitive minigames that have Kratos leaping off the Pegasus to dispatch seemingly endless swarms of mythological creatures.
What does working within this mythology bring to this action genre?
I think working with the Greek mythology source material really adds an operatic feel to the traditional action game. It allows us to really make this grand epic adventure that the player can truly be a part of and interact with.
