Not Your Ordinary Smackdown at THQ U.S. Army battles and ancient Egyptian adventure muscle in on wrestlers
THQ's rich selection of games based on licensed franchises is expanding to include three unique projects.
Full Spectrum Warrior for Xbox is based on a highly realistic urban-combat training simulation that Pandemic Studios (of Battlezone and Dark Reign fame) developed for the U.S. Army. A topical tactical-action infantry game exactingly built upon official Army doctrine, it features solo and two-player modes.
Sphinx and the Shadow of Set for GameCube and PS2 employs ancient Egyptian mythology as the basis for a completely original adventure created by Eurocom Ent. In it, players guide a demigod through magical portals to face fanciful creatures and despotic enemies.
THQ will also reveal details of a game created in partnership with Homeworld and Impossible Creatures developer Relic Ent.
Wrestling always gets considerable attention at THQ, and that trend continues in 2003. WrestleMania XIX (Yukes) for GameCube features 40 WWE wrestlers, including Rey Mysterio, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan, and the Rock. There's also a new Story mode with 30 missions, higher-quality graphics, and new game modes including Sweet Revenge and Challenge. WWE Raw 2 (Anchor) sends 45 superstar wrestlers to Xbox and features a four-player multiplayer season. PlayStation 2 fans, don't despair: THQ will also talk up WWE Smackdown! 5.
THQ's relationship with Nickelodeon has been so successful, the cable channel asked the publisher to look out for new game projects it could further develop into TV shows. The result? Avalanche's Tak and the Power of Juju, a light-hearted prehistoric 3D platformer for GameCube and PS2.
Jumping into the far future is Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior (PC, PS2). A first-person actioner based on the
popular boxed game, it features colossal mechanical war machines, crushing artillery, vast starships, and combat on many exotic worlds.
THQ is also showing off three new racing titles. Splashdown Rides Gone Wild is Rainbow Studios' whimsical watercraft racer sequel, with bigger waves.
