Sega Enters Year of The Hedgehog
Sonic to appear on all major gaming platforms
Today, Sega announced that the company will ship four new Sonic The Hedgehog games this fiscal yea, for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, and Game Boy Advance.
Sonic Heroes, a squad-based action game featuring Sonic and his partners Knuckles and Tails, marks the first-ever appearance of Sega's furry blue mascot on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. In Sonic Heroes, players can simultaneously control a team of three characters, using Sonic's speed, Knuckles' power, and Tails' flying abilities to defeat the evil Dr. Eggman.
Sonic Heroes represents the first simultaneous multiplatform launch in the history of the franchise.
GameCube owners will also see the release of Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut, which Sega calls "the definitive version of the blockbuster Sega Dreamcast classic." Sonic Adventure DX will add more than 50 bonus missions, plus enhanced graphics and audio to the original game.
Rounding out Sonic's interactive plans are two Game Boy Advance releases: Sonic Pinball Party and Sonic Battle.
Sonic Pinball Party will deliver pinball action with several themed boards based on classic Sonic Team games, including Nights, Samba de Amigo, and the original Sonic The Hedgehog.
Sonic Battle will emphasize head-to-head combat between well-known characters from the franchise, including Tails, Amy Rose, and more.
Additionally, Sega's mascot will also appear on the Nokia N-Gage mobile game deck in SonicN, a side-scrolling action title based on the Sonic series.
Rounding out Sega's Year of the Hedgehog is Sonic's star turn in Sonic X, an animated series that recently debuted in Japan and coming soon to North America.
"Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the most popular videogame characters of all time," said Shinobu Toyoda, executive vice president of content strategy and business development, SEGA of America, Inc.
